SUMMARY
As World War II began, men were rushed out to fight for their country and women were left behind at home. On the home front in Australia, women dealt with the consequences of war: taking care of children, dealing with family responsibilities and the loss of loved ones. The government did not allow women to participate in the military or have jobs, and they politely discouraged them. As more and more men disappeared into war, women were recruited to fill in the gap. They took up jobs that required hard physical labour like farming and working in the industry. WWII gave women new opportunities and had a profoundly liberating effect on many, who continued this independence.
